According to the DGUV report ‘Occupational Accident Occurrences 2020’, 22.3% of all workplace accidents are tripping, slipping, or falling accidents (SSF accidents). The highest proportion occurs in production facilities and workshops. Causes are usually risks and safety deficiencies in the affected person’s work environment, such as cables lying around, hoses, and general disorder.
A tidy and clean workplace minimizes sources of danger for employees and ensures their safety.
Legal requirements:
According to the Workplace Ordinance, the workplace must always be kept clean and tidy, floors and access routes must be kept free of obstacles. The employer must ensure that hazards to the safety and health of employees are avoided as far as possible and that remaining hazards are kept to a minimum (§ 3a para. 1 ArbStättV).
Furthermore, the Industrial Safety Ordinance states that safe access to the workplace must be ensured and that a hazard-free stay must be possible. Cables must be laid in such a way that hazards are avoided (§9 para. 1 No. 5, 10 BetrSichV).
